EMPHASIS: Attempted Traffic Stop Results In Short Pursuit/Shots Fired
On Monday, March 07, 2011, at approximately 10:38 p.m., a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop a Ford Ranger pickup truck on Missouri Route W in Reynolds County for a traffic violation. The driver of the truck fled and a pursuit of the vehicle was initiated. The driver attempted to evade capture by driving into a wooded area off the highway with the trooper maintaining pursuit until the pickup truck became partially stuck. The trooper exited his patrol car and was approaching the pickup on foot when the driver managed to free the truck, turn it around, and again attempt to flee, putting the trooper in harm’s way. At this time, the trooper fired several rounds from his duty pistol at the truck in self-defense. Subsequently, the pickup truck impacted a tree and two male subjects exited the vehicle and fled into the woods. The passenger has since been located and is being questioned, while the driver is still at large and being sought at this time.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
