EMPHASIS: Troop E To Participate In Operation Lifesaver Positive Enforcement Activities

Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, announces on Sept. 19, 2012, Troop E will be working with members of the Missouri Operation Lifesaver program in Butler County to raise the awareness level for railroad crossing safety and trespass prevention. This will be accomplished by Operation Lifesaver team members visiting with motorists briefly in advance of certain railroad crossings and at locations where pedestrians cross the tracks. Team members will be reminding drivers and pedestrians about railroad safety tips as they approach crossings and tracks throughout the county.

Operation Lifesaver team members will consist of troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, local law enforcement agencies, Union Pacific, Missouri Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and Operation Lifesaver volunteers.

Over the past two years, four crossing crashes have occurred in Butler County resulting in two fatalities and three injuries. In addition, during the same time frame, one trespass incident has resulted in one injury.

For more information on Operation Lifesaver, contact Rick Mooney, Missouri Operation Lifesaver state coordinator, at 573-634-4113 (office) or 573-230-3284 (cell). For additional information or statistics, please visit the state website at www.ShowMeOL.org or the national website at www.oli.org.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
