Captain Scott A. Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted form 11 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2016, to 3 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2016. The checkpoint, located at Southwest Trafficway at 39th Street, was a joint effort with the Kansas City [MO] Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The location was determined by past arrests, incidents, and traffic crashes in the county.

Nearly 750 vehicles were stopped during this four-hour operation and members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas City [MO] Police Department made the following arrests:

36 -- DWI
2 -- Driver’s License Summons
2 -- Hazardous Moving Violations
3 -- No Insurance Violations
3 -- Seat Belt Violations
11 -- Non-moving Traffic Violations
4 -- Misdemeanor Drug Violations
1 -- Felony Drug Violations
2 -- Felony Warrant Arrests

Captain Shipers stated, “The focus of law enforcement is to enforce all laws and apprehend violators. The goal of DWI enforcement projects is to deter impaired driving and to make citizens aware that drinking and driving will not be tolerated.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
