EMPHASIS: Trooper shoots suspect during burglary

On February 13, 2009, at 9:32 a.m., Troop H received a call for assistance from the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff’s department was responding to a call of a suspicious person, running between residences at the west edge of Maryville. Two Missouri State Highway Patrolmen arrived at the location and were joined by two Maryville Public Safety officers and the Nodaway County Sheriff. The suspicious person had broken into a residence and was reported to be in the kitchen area of the home with a single shot rifle. The officers entered the residence from the garage and went into the kitchen area, where the suspect was standing; holding a gun. A trooper repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but the suspect instead raised the gun toward the officers. The trooper, fearing for his life and the life of the other officers, fired his service weapon, striking the suspect in the right arm.
The suspect was secured and transferred by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Maryville. It has been determined that the weapon used by the suspect was a BB gun.
The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the shooting.
