EMPHASIS: Patrol Vehicle Struck While Working Roadside During Inclement Weather.
Since January of this year Southwest Missouri residents have experienced unusual and prolonged weather patterns ranging from ice in January and February, to spring tornados, and now record-breaking rain falls. The Patrol is reminding all drivers, during ideal or inclement weather conditions, to be mindful of the emergency responders working roadside.
On Thursday afternoon, June 19, 2008, Sergeant Greg Smith, Missouri State Highway Patrol, was investigating a non-injury crash on US Highway 65, (a four-lane highway) in Christian County when his vehicle was struck by a passing motorist who failed to slow down or move over, as required by law. Sgt. Smith was in his vehicle, roadside with emergency lights activated, at the time of the crash. Sgt. Smith suffered minor injuries and was treated by and released from a Springfield hospital.
As a reminder to the public to slow down and/or move over for emergency workers working roadside, as required by law, Sgt. Smith’s patrol vehicle will be available for media viewing at Troop D, Springfield, at 2 p.m. today, June 23, 2008
