EMPHASIS: March Enforcement Projects Scheduled In Troop A

Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Leeās Summit, announces four traffic enforcement operations will be conducted sometime during the month of March 2012. Two driving while intoxicated saturations will be held in Platte County. Troopers assigned to the saturation will concentrate their efforts on highways which have been found to have a higher number of alcohol-related crashes and enforcement contacts.

In addition, troopers will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Jackson County. At the checkpoint, drivers will be stopped at a static location. Upon contact with the officers, drivers will be asked to produce their driverās license and proof of insurance. Normally, the wait at a checkpoint is less than five minutes. Unless officers suspect drinking or other violations, most drivers will not be asked to exit their vehicles.

Finally, the Patrol will be conducting hazardous moving violations saturation in Clay County. Assigned troopers will focus their enforcement efforts primarily in high-crash areas, with an emphasis on speed, improper lane changes, following too close, and impaired drivers.

The sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri fatal traffic crashes. In 2011, 220 people were killed and 916 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. Thatās why the Missouri State Highway Patrol will join other Missouri law enforcement agencies to crack down on drunk driving throughout the month of March.

āDriving drunk is simply not worth all the consequences,ā stated Captain Powell. āOur message is simple and unwavering: Drive sober or get pulled over.ā
