EMPHASIS: Trooper-Involved Shooting

On Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at approximately 5:03 p.m., a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper initiated a traffic stop on the south service road of Interstate 44, one mile west of Sullivan, Missouri. A preliminary investigation has revealed the following:

The suspect vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. After the trooper made contact with the suspect, the suspect fled in his vehicle, which resulted in a short vehicular pursuit. The suspect abandoned his vehicle in the 1600 block of the south service road and ran on foot. A foot pursuit ensued and the trooper encountered the suspect behind a residence near the Ditch Witch Groundbreaking Company. The suspect displayed a handgun and was shot by the trooper. The suspect was taken by ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri. The suspect was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Next of kin notification is pending.

The trooper was not injured and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug Crime Control, continues to investigate this incident.
