EMPHASIS: Interstate 44 Moving Hazard Initiative Involves Several Law Enforcement Agencies.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies will be making a concerted effort on Friday, July 17, 2009, to target reckless drivers on I-44.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol, along with the Springfield Police Department, the Greene County Sheriff's Department, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Department, and the Joplin Police Department will participate in the initiative.
There will be a news conference at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, July 15, at the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, to highlight the efforts law enforcement will make in the detection of violators.
“It’s never worth the risk to drive carelessly. If involved in a crash it could cause permanent physical injury or even death,” Troop D’s Commanding Officer Captain Juan Villanueva said.
In 2007, Missouri crash data indicates 410 people died and 14,506 were injured in speed-related traffic crashes. That translates to a death or injury every 35.2 minutes on Missouri roadways.
