EMPHASIS: Captain Powell Announces Promotion Of Corporal Stephen A. Coats


Captain Robert Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces effective November 1, 2010, Corporal Stephen A. Coats was promoted to the rank of sergeant and designated as the zone supervisor of Zone 7, Jackson County. Sergeant Coats was appointed to the Patrol on July 1, 1996, as a member of the 72nd Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson, City, he was assigned to Troop A, Zone 1, Platte County. In May 2002, he was promoted to corporal and designated as the assistant zone supervisor of Zone 12, Johnson County.
Sergeant Coats was born in Flint, Michigan, but grew up in West Plains, Missouri, where he graduated from West Plains High School in 1992. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Missouri, in Warrensburg, Missouri, in 1996. Sergeant Coats is married to Sarah (Baird), formerly of West Plains, Missouri, and they have two daughters: Katie, 6, and Emma, 4.
