EMPHASIS: Marine Operations Troopers Rescue Mother And Daughter From Frozen Lake

On January 6, 2015, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Troop D marine operations troopers of the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in a joint operation that resulted in the water rescue of two Dallas County residents from a frozen lake north of Buffalo, Missouri.

Troopers were able to use their Patrol boat to travel approximately 100 yards to rescue the two women. Ice had to be broken at the shoreline, so their boat could be launched. Troopers then had to break ice on the lake to reach the women and bring them back to safety.

The incident started as the woman and her daughter attempted to rescue their dog, after it had wandered onto the ice and had fallen through while chasing ducks. In an attempt to bring the dog to shore, the two pushed a small paddleboat out onto the ice. However, the ice began to break, leaving the women trapped for about an hour until rescue units were called.

Several agencies assisted in the rescue. These included: Louisburg Fire Department, Tunas Fire Department, Buffalo City Fire Department, Urbana Fire Department, Bennett Springs Fire and Rescue, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, and Mercy Ambulance.
