EMPHASIS: Excelsior Springs Man Charged With Assault On Law Enforcment

The Ray County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced Anthony R. Stevenson, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was charged with 14 counts of first degree assault on a law enforcement officer, 14 counts of armed criminal action, and one count of assault on a police animal following an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control.
On November 6, 2015, the Clay County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop a vehicle Stevenson was driving for a traffic violation and a pursuit ensued. The Clay County Sheriff’s office lost sight of the vehicle and began canvassing the area. Stevenson then stole a blue Pontiac Grand Prix. A Clay County deputy attempted to stop Stevenson in the stolen car; however, Stevenson did not stop. As Stevenson entered Ray County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Ray County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the pursuit. Stevenson began shooting at law enforcement during the pursuit, and was able to elude capture. However, on November 7, 2015, Stevenson was located in a culvert near Dockery Road and 184 Road, in Ray County. As multiple agencies converged onto the scene in an attempt to apprehend Stevenson, he began firing several shots toward law enforcement. Stevenson subsequently surrendered and was arrested without further incident.

Stevenson is being held at the Clay County Jail on a $750,000 cash only bond. The above charges for which Stevenson was arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
