EMPHASIS: 2009 July 4th Traffic Crash And C.A.R.E. Totals For Troop I

Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the July 4th traffic crash and enforcement totals for Troop I. This year’s traffic crash counting period began at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009, and ended at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, July 5, 2009. During the holiday counting period, Troop I officers also participated in Operation (C.A.R.E.), which is a multi-state “Combined Accident Reduction Effort”.
During the extended July 4th traffic crash counting period troopers assigned to Troop I investigated 33 crashes, resulting in 10 injuries, and made 11 arrests for driving while intoxicated. During the C.A.R.E. counting period, which began at 12:01 a.m., Friday July 3, 2009, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2009, Troop I officers investigated 28 crashes, four of which were alcohol related. During that same period, Troop I officers issued 180 citations for speed and 52 to individuals who were not wearing a seat belt. Four motorists were cited for failing to have their child properly restrained in a child restraint system. In addition to these totals, Troop I officers assisted 92 motorists.
Captain Kenley, stated, “I hope that you and your family were able to enjoy the festivities of the 4th of July without being involved in a traffic crash. Unfortunately, many Missourians spent the holiday either caring for an injured family member or dealing with the loss of property because of a traffic crash. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is committed to making our highways as safe as possible. We realize that this goal can only be achieved if all motorists take the job of driving seriously and always obey the rules of the road.”
