EMPHASIS: U.S. Highway 36 In Caldwell County Reopened

U.S. Highway 36 in Caldwell County has reopened after a traffic stop involving a suicidal subject. Details are as follows:

On January 25, 2016, approximately 4:15 a.m., the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department requested assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol with a suicidal subject. The Caldwell County Sheriff's Department stopped a 2004 Chevrolet pickup for a speed violation on U.S. Highway 36 eastbound, approximately two miles east of Hamilton, Missouri. After the vehicle was stopped, the driver brandished a weapon and threatened suicide. U.S. 36 was closed in both directions and negotiations were ongoing with the suspect.

At approximately 10:16 a.m. negotiations were successful resulting in the suspect agreeing to exit the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect, a 39-year-old white male from Hannibal, Missouri, was transported to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department. U.S. 36 is now open for normal use.

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
