EMPHASIS: Patrol Announces Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Program

Captain Ronald S. Johnson, commanding officer Troop C, Weldon Spring, announces that the Missouri State Highway Patrol has received federal funding from the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program to conduct SAFETE, an enforcement program focusing on violations of commercial motor vehicles. The extra enforcement efforts will be conducted during the months of June, July, August, and September, and will focus on commercial motor vehicle violations. These extra enforcement efforts will be conducted in the Troop C counties of Franklin, Jefferson, St. Charles, and St. Louis. Aggressive driving by commercial motor vehicles will be targeted and officers will concentrate on detecting violations that contribute to traffic crashes.

Officers will focus their enforcement activities on hazardous operations of commercial motor vehicles that could result in a traffic crash. Of all 2010 Missouri traffic crashes, nine percent involved a commercial motor vehicle. Of all fatal traffic crashes, 12.6% involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 105 persons were killed and 4,007 were injured in commercial motor vehicle crashes.

Captain Johnson stated, “Enforcement of commercial motor vehicle violations is critical to the safety of the motoring public. Please assist us in our efforts by reporting careless drivers and other suspicious activities on Missouri’s roadways.”

The Patrol continues to encourage the public to report suspected drunk and careless drivers by dialing *55 or 9-1-1 on their cell phones. Through the combined efforts of the Highway Patrol, local law enforcement, and the citizens of Missouri, we can work together to reduce the number of traffic crashes and fatalities on Missouri’s roadways.
