EMPHASIS: NAACP Event In Jefferson City

Captain Greg Kindle, commanding officer, Troop F, Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces information for motorists concerning the NAACP march coming to the Jefferson City area on Friday, December 5.

Motorists traveling U.S. 50 east of Jefferson City on Friday are reminded to drive carefully, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians and slow moving traffic as a group of marchers makes its way to the Capitol city. The marchers traveled through Linn at about 10:30 a.m. today.

On Friday, motorists traveling in downtown Jefferson City, particularly near the Missouri State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion, may experience delays due to pedestrian traffic and some streets may be closed temporarily to vehicle traffic. The Patrol asks that all members of the public be alert for temporary changes in normal traffic patterns and follow traffic instructions provided by police officers.

In discussions with police and in a parade permit request filed with the City of Jefferson, organizers of the “Journey for Justice” have indicated they expect to arrive at the eastern city limits on U.S. Highway 50 east at about noon Friday, and will march to the Capitol from Monroe Street to Capitol Avenue. They will walk to the Governor’s Gardens, where they will assemble, and at 3 p.m. march to the State Capitol, where they will remain for approximately one hour. Their plan is to end the event and depart Jefferson City at 4 p.m.
The Patrol will be working with the Cole County Sheriff’s Department, the Jefferson City Police Department, Missouri Capitol Police, and the Lincoln University Police Department on traffic issues as the group makes its way to and around town, and to provide security during the expected Capitol rally.

Jefferson City – particularly the State Capitol building – is visited by large groups many times throughout the year, including thousands of visitors attending rallies, protests, summits, conventions, and parades. As always, we are committed to keeping all members of the public safe and protecting the constitutional rights of all.
