On December 1, 2010, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Troop F officers were requested to assist in locating a suspect allegedly involved in brandishing a weapon and holding a female subject hostage in his vehicle. The incident occurred in California, MO. The female was able to escape the vehicle, and the California Police Department initiated a pursuit, but was unable to stop the vehicle. The suspect was identified as William H. Redel, 51, of Jefferson City, MO.
At approximately 9:43 p.m., troopers located the suspect vehicle at Fine Food Randles Court Motel in Eldon, MO. As the troopers approached the motel room, they observed the suspect in the doorway with a gun. Shots were fired and the suspect was later located in the motel room severely injured by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was transported from the scene by ambulance to the Eldon Airport for airlift to University Hospital in Columbia, MO. However, he was pronounced dead prior to being airlifted. There were no other injuries during the incident.
