EMPHASIS: Mississippi resident presented Honorary Trooper Certificate.

Captain G. E. Ridens, Commanding Officer, Troop E, Poplar Bluff announced that Jimmy L. Hamilton, of Tupelo, Mississippi, is recognized as an Honorary Trooper. Captain Ridens presented Mr. Hamilton with an Honorary Trooper certificate at a ceremony on January 25, 2006 in Portageville, Missouri. Mr. Hamilton was recommended for his bravery due to his actions involving a fatal motor vehicle crash on November 23, 2005, which was investigated by Sergeant R. M. Walker.

Mr. Hamilton and his wife were traveling on Interstate 55 and witnessed a motor vehicle accident in which a Sport Utility Vehicle crossed the median and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer. Unfortunately all occupants of the Sport Utility Vehicle were killed. The driver of the tractor-trailer, John D. Sparks, of Sikeston, Mo. was severely injured and his truck was engulfed in flames. Mr. Sparks attempted to exit the vehicle, but fell next to the burning truck due to a broken right leg. Mr. Hamilton's quick response and heroic actions resulted in him pulling Mr. Sparks away from the burning vehicle and across the median to a safe location to await medical assistance. Mr. Hamilton's actions proved heroic and prevented any further loss of life in this horrendous accident.

Captain Ridens stated " Mr. Hamilton is deserving of the Honorary Trooper Certificate by performing in an exemplary manner, under dangerous conditions. Unknowingly Mr. Hamilton upheld the motto of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, of Service and Protection, while saving the life of Mr. Sparks."
