EMPHASIS: Patrol Announces Change To Assigning New Troopers

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is pleased to announce the following change to assigning new troopers:

Beginning with the 87th Recruit Class, the Missouri State Highway Patrol will offer trooper applicants the option of selecting the location of their first (road) assignment. New Patrol recruits who are successful in the selection process, and finish the required Academy training, will be able to work and live in an area of their choice. These preferred assignments will be offered on a trial basis throughout the state.

Until this recruit class, in its nearly 76 years of existence, the Missouri State Highway Patrol has required new officers to agree to relocate anywhere in the state of Missouri upon graduation from the Academy. The new program is designed to recruit individuals who may have chosen not to apply to the Missouri State Highway Patrol because of the need to relocate, many times requiring a spouse to find new employment and children to change schools.

Colonel James F. Keathley initiated the change to provide more flexibility to people who are otherwise motivated to join one of the best law enforcement agencies in the nation.
