EMPHASIS: Patrol Participates In Red Ribbon Week

The Patrol will participate in National Red Ribbon Week, October 22 - 31, 2007. Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity for people to join together and show their commitment in the fight against drugs in their own homes, schools, and neighborhoods. To show its support of National Red Ribbon Week, the Highway Patrol will provide red ribbons to all uniformed members. The ribbons will be attached to patrol vehicle antennas or in a similar location from October 22-31, 2007.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse office serves as a coordinator for communities and schools planning events to commemorate Red Ribbon Week. This council has provided red ribbons to the Patrol.

Every day, Missouri’s troopers are working to find illegal drugs. Troopers look beyond traffic stops, and use their training and instincts to locate illegal drugs. Troopers work undercover to stop the sale of illegal drugs. Troopers also present educational programs to teach people of all ages the dangers of illegal drugs. In 2006, troopers removed thousands of pounds of marijuana, and record amounts of methamphetamine and PCP from Missouri’s roadways. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is committed to the fight against drugs.

The National Family Partnership (NFP) created Red Ribbon Week in 1988, to commemorate the life and death of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, who died in the fight against drugs. The NFP asked youth and adults to wear and display red ribbons during the last week of October to demonstrate their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle and to remember Agent Camarena. Red Ribbon Week has since grown into a national program.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages other law enforcement agencies, civic organizations, community groups, and area youth to support Red Ribbon Week. Say no to drugs!
