EMPHASIS: Troop E DDCC Unit Investigates Assault of East Prarie Police Officer

On March 27, 2005, the East Prairie Police Department requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate an alleged assault of a local police officer. According to initial reports, the incident occurred inside the city limits of East Prairie at approximately 7:30 p.m., at the intersection of Cutliph and Abner streets.

After the initial traffic stop was initiated, Bryan C. Jackson, 20, East Prairie, MO, allegedly attempted to back his Pontiac into the police officer and struck the officer’s vehicle. A brief pursuit followed and the suspect vehicle entered a circle driveway a short distance later. As the officer approached the suspect, Jackson allegedly accelerated his Pontiac and struck the officer. The officer reportedly defended himself by firing his duty weapon, striking the driver and injuring one of the passengers. Another pursuit followed the shooting scene, but the driver was quickly apprehended a short time later on South Center Street.

Jackson and the passenger were transported the Delta Regional Medical Center in Sikeston, MO, for treatment of their injuries. Both subjects were treated and released. Bryan C. Jackson was taken into custody and was charged with two Class A felony counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and one Class D felony of resisting arrest. Jackson continues to be held in the Mississippi County Jail in lieu of bond.

The charges for which Jackson has been arrested are mere accusation and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
