EMPHASIS: Traffic Stop On U.S. Highway 61 Results In Drug Arrest

On May 18, 2007, at approximately 9:25 p.m. a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped a 2002 Dodge Stratus traveling south on U.S. Highway 61 at Interstate 55 in New Madrid County for a stop sign violation.
The driver Barry Williams, 43, of Caruthersville, Missouri, was stopped for a stop sign violation. After receiving consent to search, the trooper discovered a Ziplock bag of cocaine and baggies of marijuana. Barry Williams, the driver, and Lemarcus C. Smith, 26, of Charleston, Missouri, a passenger, were arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and taken to the New Madrid County Jail.
The charges for which Barry Williams and Lemarcus C. Smith were arrested for are mere accusation and not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
