Captain George E. Ridens, commanding officer of Troop E, announces the results of a DWI checkpoint conducted in Troop E, Cape Girardeau County, beginning on May 2, 2009, at 10 p.m. and ending on May 3, 2009, at 3 a.m. During the operation, troopers were assigned to conduct a sobriety checkpoint at a location known to have a high number of alcohol-related arrests and traffic crashes.
Troopers made 25 arrests during the shift: 16 driving while intoxicated arrests, one felony driving while intoxicated arrest, two misdemeanor drug arrests, five other misdemeanor arrests, and one misdemeanor warrant arrest. Traffic citations issued by officers included two for seat belt violations, five for no driver’s license, and one stop sign violation. Troopers also issued 90 warnings for various other traffic violations during the operation.
Captain Ridens stated, “The impaired driver continues to be a major contributor to serious traffic crashes in southeast Missouri. DWI checkpoints are a part of the Patrol’s effort to remove intoxicated drivers from Missouri roadways. The troopers in the Troop E area will continue to pursue this goal.”
