EMPHASIS: No Passing Zones Designed To Increase Safety

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists of the importance of passing vehicles safely. When a solid yellow line appears, it indicates a no passing zone for the drivers on the same side of the center line as the yellow one. These markings are designed to help increase safety for all motorists. Most often, they are used when visibility of oncoming traffic is low, such as on curves and hills.

Another place to be especially careful is intersections. In Section 304.016, RSMo., the law states, “No vehicle shall at any time be driving to the left side of the roadway under the following conditions:

1) When approaching the crest of a grade or upon a curve of a highway where the driver’s view is obstructed within such distance as to create a hazard in the event another vehicle might approach from the opposite directions;

2) When the view is obstructed upon approaching within 100 feet of any bridge, viaduct, tunnel, or when approaching within 100 feet of or at any intersection or railgrade crossing.”

Violations of this section of Missouri law are deemed a Class C misdemeanor.

Improper passing was a contributing circumstance in 21 fatalities and 759 injuries in 2008. Please stay alert. When a yellow line appears on your side of the centerline, don’t pass. The life you save could be your own.
