EMPHASIS: NHTSA, AAMVA Recognize Patrol’s Efforts

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is pleased to inform the public the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administration (AAMVA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) presented a highway safety award to the state of Missouri. This award recognizes Missouri’s achieving the greatest reduction in the number of highway fatalities not involving a commercial vehicle in the United States. During 2006, Missouri realized 13 percent fewer fatalities in this category when compared to 2005 statistics.

The award was presented on August 21, 2007, at the AAMVA’s annual international conference in Rapid City, SD. Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri Department of Revenue representatives were present to accept the award.

“The Patrol is proud to have been included in this ceremony,” said Col. Keathley. “The work of troopers and other Patrol personnel significantly contributed to the fatality reduction through enforcing traffic laws and educating the public, ensuring safe vehicles through the motor vehicle inspection program, enforcing commercial vehicle laws and regulations, ensuring drivers are properly licensed through the driver examination program, or one of the many other responsibilities of Patrol personnel.”

Col. Keathley also urges the public to assist the Patrol in its effort to reduce traffic fatalities. “Every driver has a stake in this. Working together, we can reach a goal of less than 1,000 traffic fatalities in Missouri by 2008. Please pay attention when you are driving, wear your seat belt, and don’t drink and drive.”
