EMPHASIS: Traffic Stop On I-55 Results in Drug Arrest

On January 27, 2007, at approximately 2330 hours members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped to check a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer parked on the shoulder of I-55 at the 50-mile marker, in New Madrid County.

The driver, Jeremy Guyton, 21, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was checked for well being and asked if he needed assistance. As the trooper spoke with the driver he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The trooper asked for permission to search and was denied permission. A Highway Patrol K-9 officer was requested to respond to the scene. The K-9 alerted on the vehicle and approximately 100 grams of Crack Cocaine was found under the back seat. Jeremy Guyton was arrested for Possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and taken to the New Madrid County jail.

The charges for which Jeremy Guyton was arrested for are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
