EMPHASIS: Patrol Adds Motorcycles To Fleet

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to inform the public that the agency has added eight Harley-Davidson FLHTP Electra Glide Police motorcycles to its fleet of vehicles. The motorcycles are dark “peace officer” blue, and were ordered without emergency lighting, siren, radar, and police radios. The Patrol’s Motor Equipment and Communications divisions installed this important equipment upon receipt of the motorcycles. In addition, each motorcycle has a Harley-Davidson 100th anniversary decal affixed to its front fender.

Currently, seven of the motorcycles are assigned, with two in the Troop A, Lee’s Summit, area; three in the Troop C, St. Louis, area; and two in the Troop D, Springfield, area. Motorcycle officers will focus on enforcement and traffic safety in areas known for congestion, a high volume of traffic, and those undergoing construction, where it can be difficult to maneuver a patrol car. The officers assigned to the motorcycles attended specialized training provided by Northwestern University and Harley-Davidson in Memphis, TN. According to the officers who attended, the two-week course was demanding and informative.

“The Patrol is in the business of saving lives,” said Colonel Keathley. “Our agency continually searches for innovative ways to deliver the best service possible to the people of Missouri. Adding motorcycles to our fleet will assist us in fulfilling our mission of service and protection to the public. The pilot program will help us evaluate potential impact of using motorcycles to enforce traffic laws and increase safety for the motoring public. The Patrol will also assess future needs during this initial program.”
