EMPHASIS: Patrol Reports On Ten Mile Trooper Operation

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the results of the 10-Mile Trooper special enforcement project, which took place over the Memorial Day weekend 2009. In an effort to promote safety and reduce traffic crashes on Interstates 44, 70, 29, and 55, and portions of U.S. Highways 60, 61, and 65, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers patrolled these interstate highways at 10-mile intervals on May 22, 2009, from 12 p.m. to midnight, and on May 25, 2009, from 12 p.m. to midnight. Troopers were assigned to the designated interstates and highways to maximize their visibility in the highest volume traffic areas. These troopers targeted all traffic violations, and were especially vigilant addressing aggressive driving violations.

Officers assigned to this enforcement effort patrolled a 10-mile length of interstate/highway assigned to them, and made every effort to be a visible enforcement presence during their assigned shift.

During the Ten Mile Trooper Operation, troopers made a total of 2,178 arrests, and issued 2,375 warnings.

Arrests include:

DWI -- 11
Speed – 1,271
Following Too Close -- 20
Failed To Yield -- 10
Other Hazardous Moving Violations -- 38
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Violations -- 23
Non-Moving Violations -- 215
No Driver’s License/Driver’s License Suspended/Revoked -- 88
Seat Belt Violations -- 320
Child Restraint Violations -- 22
Uninsured Motorists -- 80
Misdemeanor Criminal -- 67
Felony -- 9

During the 10-Mile Trooper Operation, there were no recorded fatal traffic crashes on the designated highways.

“During the 2009 Memorial Day holiday weekend, Missouri experienced seven fatalities” said Colonel Keathley. “Seven is too many. But, it is important to note within the special enforcement area of the 10-Mile Trooper Operation, there were zero fatalities. The Missouri State Highway Patrol continuously looks for innovative ways to compliment proven methods of enforcement. This year we extended the 10-Mile Trooper enforcement to portions of designated U.S. Highways. We remain committed to further reducing the number of traffic crashes in Missouri.”
