EMPHASIS: Bank Robbery Suspect Apprehended





Captain George Ridens, Commanding Officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, reports Troop E officers assisted the Cape Girardeau Police Department in the apprehension of a bank robbery suspect.

On May 20, 2005 at 9:26 a.m.Troop E received a telephone call from a subject reporting a bank robbery about to take place in the city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The caller advised that a bank located near the intersection of Lexington and Cape Lacroix Road was about to be robbed. Troop E immediately forwarded the call to the Cape Girardeau City Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the area and checked the Commerce Bank located at 1800 Cape Lacroix Road. While officers were checking the Commerce Bank, they were notified the Bank of Missouri, located at 1622 North Kingshighway had just been robbed. The robber reportedly jumped over the counter, grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash out of the drawers, ran out the door and got into a vehicle.



A description of the robbery suspect was obtained and a search for the robber was initiated with members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisting the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, A.T.F. (Alcohol Tabacco and Firearms ), F.B.I. ( Federal Bureau of Investigations ) and the Jackson Police Department. The suspect vehicle was found abandoned behind the Cape Lacroix Methodist Church by members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Cape Girardeau Police Department. The vehicle was later found to have been stolen from Cape Girardeau.



A short time later officers observed the suspect running in the Abbey-Horsehoe Ridge Subdivision. The suspect was taken into custody following a short foot pursuit without further incident. The money taken from the bank in the robbery has been recovered.



The suspect is in custody awaiting the filing of formal charges.
