EMPHASIS: Results of Troop E "Move Over" Enforcement Operation

Captin G. E. Ridens, Commanding Officer of Troop E, Poplar Bluff, announces the results of an enforcement operation which targeted drivers who were in violation of the "Move Over" law.

Through the month of December, Troop E officers assigned to the enforcement operation made 43 arrests for violating what is commonly called the "Move Over" law. They also issued 231 warnings during this operation.

On August 28, 2002, a law went into effect in the state of Missouri which protects police officers and other emergency responders working alongside Missouri roadways. The law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped ahead with its lights flashing. Motorists must change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they are on a multi-lane highway and can do so safely. If drivers can’t change lanes safely, or they are on a two-lane highway, they must slow down to a safe speed. A violation can result in fines.

Captain Ridens stated, "Emergency workers risk their lives everyday, I am asking all motorists to pay attention to the task of driving, and to slow down and move over when they see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder of the road. Remember our lives are on your shoulders."
