EMPHASIS: Captain Billy R. Nelson Retires

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the retirement of Captain Billy R. Nelson and thanks him for his 35 years of dedication and service to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Captain Nelson retired effective August 1, 2007.

Capt. Nelson was appointed July 1, 1972, as a member of the 41st Recruit Class. After graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy in Jefferson City, he was assigned to Troop A, Lee’s Summit, MO. Nelson was promoted to corporal in December 1977. As a corporal, he served in Troop B, Macon; Troop F, Jefferson City; and the Personnel Division at General Headquarters, Jefferson City. In July 1983, he was promoted to sergeant. Nelson was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Personnel Division as an assistant director in September 1988. He was promoted to captain in September 1994 and designated director of the Driver Examination Division. It is from this position he retires.

Capt. Nelson was born in Luxora, AR. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, MO, in 1969. He was selected to attend the Police Administration Training Program at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, from September 1981 to June 1982. Capt. Nelson and his wife, Susan, have three children: Gina, Laurissa, and Billy.

“I want to thank Capt. Nelson for his years of service and dedication to the mission of the Patrol,” said Colonel Keathley. “Bill has had an outstanding career.”
