| On January 5, 2008, the Ralls County Sheriff’s Department was called to a residence in rural New London, Missouri, regarding a death investigation. Upon arrival, officers found that John T. Elzea, 43, had died inside his residence of a single gunshot wound to the chest. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and Ralls County Coroner Woody St. Clair were summoned to the scene to assist with the investigation. As a result of an autopsy of Elzea’s body and forensic testing done on evidence collected at the scene, the gunshot wound was determined to be self-inflicted. |

| On Monday, January 21, 2008, an eastbound 2001 Toyota Camry was stopped on Interstate 44 at Missouri Highway 744, in Greene County. After developing suspicion with indicators of criminal activity, consent to search was requested, but denied. A canine sniff resulted in a positive hit on the vehicle resulting in the discovery of 100 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle. |

| Captain Dale A. Schmidt, commanding officer, Troop F Headquarters, Jefferson City, announced today the results of a sobriety checkpoint that was held in Cole County on January 19, 2008. During the operation a total of 64 vehicles were stopped. One individual was arrested for driving while intoxicated and five were arrested for minor in possession of alcohol. In addition, 30 other citations and 66 warnings were issued. Troop A’s 13-county region accounted for a total of 44 crashes with 16 occupants injured. Troopers arrested 17 drivers for driving while intoxicated.
Captain Ellis would like to remind all motorists to wear their seat belts, drive the speed limit, pay attention to the job of driving, and please do not drive a motor vehicle if you are going to be drinking alcoholic beverages. |
